Chapter 21

Retracing our steps to the front room, I tried to remember where everything was. I hadn’t exactly had time for a formal tour. Smiling at the memory of my introduction to Isak’s home, I was quiet as we went to the bedroom.

“You’re different,” Mak said softly as I thumped my bag onto Isak’s bed.

I looked at her over my shoulder. “What do you mean?”

She shrugged as she studied me. “I don’t know. But you seem…lighter, somehow. As if the weight of the world has been lifted off your shoulders.”

I turned and flopped back on the bed. “It’s him.” My voice was small. I was still afraid to trust it totally. The idea that he could handle the dark, broken, jagged pieces of me. It was so foreign. Even with Mak, I had to hold parts of my darkness back. The mask I wore with her was much thinner than with others, but it was still there.

She stretched out on the bed beside me. “He’s pushy, commanding, hotter than sin, and I’m pretty sure the man is in love with you. Like burn down the world except for the tiny piece of it under you kind of razing.”

I shook my head. “No. Not that. We’re in deep lust. Not love.”

She rolled her eyes. “You might be holding yourself back, but that man is not. He’s all in, babe.”

I shifted to look at her. “What if he finds out ab—”

Mak put her hand over my mouth. “You’ll cross that bridge if he unearths it. Don’t go borrowing trouble. And besides, I’m pretty sure he won’t care.”

I pushed back the flood of joy. I couldn’t let myself get that far, not without telling him. And I couldn’t tell him. Not yet. Maybe never, but certainly not yet.

“This one has good balance, sis.” Her words were barely a whisper.

“It doesn’t matter. He shouldn’t have to carry that. I won’t let him.” I’d do everything in my power to keep him from learning my biggest secret.

Mak heaved a sigh. “Fine.” She flopped to her back. “Why did you think it was Henry?”

I blew out a breath at the subject change, thankful with the tiniest twinge of regret. “Because it has to be someone I know from four years ago and who is in my life currently. The stalker is level-headed under pressure and knows how to curb his darker behaviors when necessary. And he feels like he has some kind of claim to me. We found out that the stalker is probably someone who works at the FBI because of the timing when Isak ran my data and when the stalker showed up at GGMA. Honestly, Henry has better skills than most FBI agents a third of his age, so something like this would be child’s play to him.”

“‘His girl.’ That’s what he calls you.”

“Calls us. His girls. But yeah. He ticks nearly all the boxes. But he doesn’t fit the psychology pattern. He knows where I work, but I would have seen him at GGMA.
